Hilltribe Museum reviews
32I visited with a sense of duty that minorities must be protected and that everyone must work hard to preserve their species. It is quite well displayed. When you enter, you can choose between Japanese and English to see a video about the hill tribes, but it was too long because it explained all the tribes. And I asked for it to be played in English, but why was it in Japanese. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't know Japanese. But it was fun, such as the tribal marriage patterns and the characteristics of clothing.
The lady at the reception was kind!
There is no guide in Japanese, but the exhibits were easy to understand and interesting.
Recommended for those who are not satisfied with just Golden Triangle! !
Nice little museum which makes a contribution to the minorities of northern Thailand, a somewhat dated explanatory film in French.
To continue the trek
The most authentic place I found about tribes and villages in the northern part of Thailand:) It’s a small, informative and well-structured museum where you will learn a lot about the tribes, their beliefs, their peculiarities and how you should behave if you go visit them. Plus, you can also buy some artefacts to support them. Definitely worths a visit!:)
The exhibits are separated by tribe. A 20-minute video will be shown in the Japanese version if you are Japanese. It was very easy to understand.
A bit old school but I must say very informative. If you are interested in the topic and want a less “paid tourist trap” view about tribes and their cultures as well as opium trade, worth going for a couple of hours. + it is only 50 baht per person.
The Hilltribe museum is a look into the tribes that live in the mountains surrounding Chiang Rai, the clothing styles that distinguish them,
their crafts and the implements they use for living. If you're interested in learning about these cultures there's a relaxed video presentation and rooms displaying walls of information and artifacts galore. It's worth the 50 baht.
Excellent. Do take a look and educate yourself about Thailand's Hill tribes. Great, informative and engaging small museum. 50 bhat entrance fee and a 15 minute film to start it off.
The museum has loads of potential and posses loads of information however the way is presented is too messy. The contains needs to be updated and a makeover is way overdue!
Very nice museum. Ticket is 50 baht, they offer you a cup of tea or coffee and you can watch a video about different tribes of the area. The video is available in different language including french. You can then visit the little museum. There is a lot to read about opium.
Very small museum about history and life of hill tribes in the region. Run by the local foundation. I have learned a lot about the region. The place is not busy. But in general - for connoisseurs.) Tickets 50B.
Very informative and important if you are planning to visit any of the hill tribes. Can be difficult to find as it is on the third floor of an office building.
So interesting! I'm so happy I went! Started with a very informative video and a glass of tea or coffee. The exhibit has lots of information in English. I'd read a review that it was small and didn't take much time. But I think I was there about an hour and a half. I suppose it depends on how interested you are. Lots of history, from hundreds of years to recent, about opium. Well worth the 50 baht entrance.
It's absolute worth to visit it. The small museum gives a good overview and some interesting informations when it comes to northern hilltribes.
Very controversial. In the video they explain how tribes are explored by tourism. Yet, the same museum offers tours to visit the tribes, including the long neck Karen tribe and elephant rides.
This is an old museum but still contains some interesting information and artifacts. Wish we could have seen the video; that would have been interesting as well.
Museum looks like it was last touched in 2000. Articles are out of date. Exhibits are not protected. Labels and descriptions are repeated throughout.
There are also signs saying don't walk through a spirit gate, but part of the museum is through a mock spirit gate. Don't visit human zoos, but we have a tour where you can see hilltribe members. Don't buy hilltribe items, but our gift shop sells hilltribe items (as explained by staff). It sends a very conflicting message and I think some of it is unethical.
It looks closed for the foreseeable future but had a cool mural. The park opposite is cool though.
