Madam Somtum reviews
43Whoever voted this in the top 19 restaurants to visit in Bangkok has clearly never been to Bangkok. Service was as stale as the food and they forgot my order, left me waiting for 20mins before I complained.
We had a dinner on our first night in Bangkok as it is closer to our hotel. Great atmosphere, delicious food and fast service.
Quite an authentic Thai food experience. Pricing wise pretty cheap. Food portion is small but good that we can then order plenty of food to share.
The casual Thai-style interior and lighting are stylish and whet your appetite even more. The menu is diverse, especially Isan food, and the prices are cheap.
I really recommend this place.
Amazing Papaya Salad. My girlfriend and I go there for takeaway at least 3 nights a week. Great tast and really big portions.
Best som tum in Bangkok.
An authentic Thai cafe right down to the bugs. Most of the menus are only in Thai. (They have English menu, too.)
Som Tum with Crab was good. I asked for “Thai ped” (as a Thai would have it) and it was ridiculously spicy. A small but reasonable size.
The doors are wide open, this is really an outdoor restaurant. I got several bug bites within minutes of sitting down. That unpleasantness continued throughout the mail and I could not wait to get out of there. I had this meal at 8 PM it might be better during the day.
Inexpensive, this meal with a water cost 95 baht.
Other than salads, this restaurant actually has limited menu. The stuff speak very little English, so when we asked for something I.e, ice and drink, they just ignored us. We literally asked for at least 10 times before they brought us ice. For foreigners, please do yourself a favor by calculating your bill carefully, as they were trying to overcharge us. And it was not a mistake, because when I asked him to show me the handwritten order, he didn’t seem surprised at all but immediately agreed with my calculation. To cover his embarrassment, he then added 5 baht to my total and said it was for the ice. How pathetic! Stay away from this dishonest business!
Local thai food.food is delicious but small.friendly staff but cant speak english much.must try if u want real local food
The food is okay not too spicy ️, and when you ask for less spicy it's really less spicy so good for people if they want to eat Thai "yam" food but can't handle spice well!
The prices are affordable
Recommended by the staff at The Athenee Hotel. Not disappointed, amazing food and friendly staff. Highly recommend.
I am very sad to have to write this review as I have in the past had quite a number of fun evenings and delicious meals at this restaurant.
Alas, today all that positivity was taken away from me due to the shear arrogance, indifference, and downright contempt demonstrated by the staff.
I wanted to take three of my Thai colleagues out for a Somtam lunch to say Thank you for some great work they have done.
I arrived with confidence as I know the food is good and it is a nice place.
We sat down at 11.40 at our pre-booked table and ordered a number of dishes.
After 5 minutes - Drinks arrive
After 10 minutes - Sticky Rice arrives
After 35 minutes - Somtam arrives and one of the other dishes (a soup) that we ordered
After 50 minutes - No sign of the Chicken Wings or Beef despite asking several times and being effectively given the cold shoulder
I spoke to the person who seemed to be the Manager and as I was talking he just took a phone call and basically blanked me. I waited patiently until he finished the call and then he just ignored me again!
We then canceled the dishes so had a wholly unsatisfactory meal consisting of less than half the dishes we ordered. We could not stay longer as we had to return to the office as we had already been away for over 1 hour.
So we paid, received absolutely no apology or even the slightest flicker of concern about treating customers in this way.
THIS IS NOT PROFESSIONAL AND IT'S NOT ETHICAL.
I will not go back; which is frustrating as the food is actually really good.
I know mistakes happen and this place is busy but a "sorry about that", or a "please accept a discount as we messed up" would have been fine.
A great shame that myself and my colleagues had a disappointing lunch but more so that in the "land of smiles" where service is normally exemplary: we experienced nothing more than an absolute disregard for human decency and manners.
This place left me with mixed feelings. On one hand the grilled chicken plate alone is worth coming here to eat, but on the other hand, the service was pretty bad. Nobody really acknowledged us the whole time.
Love the foods here, we came as a group and ordered many manus. For somtum, you can order level of spicy. Good taste for all dishes esp somtum with anchovy. Grilled chicken, pork, beef are very soft and tasty. Other menus like spicy salad with pork, salmon is also recommended. Variety of menus with reasonable price. Food also came very fast even during lunch time.
Very tasty somtum (papaya salad) - made fresh, right in the front of the shop. This is the only vegetarian food available. Very reasonably priced.
The first time my wife and I went here we were amazed by the food and we thought we had found our new favorite Isaan restaurant. We revisited about a week later near the lunchtime rush and were very disappointed with the service and the food. Oh well.
I've never had a bad service experience like this before. The staff ignored the order and also cancel our food without let us know anything. I needed to go ask for the food by myself at the restaurant kitchen after waiting and asking about our order for a long time until our food got cold. Please try to not come here at a busy period like lunch time.and they only accept cash. I strongly do not recommend this place.
Hit and a lot of miss. Grilled chicken/pork neck and fried chicken wings are the best among others. Som Tum Thai and other sweet-and-sour som tums are acceptable. Tum Pla Ra or som tum with fermented fish sauce is okay. Yum is unfortunately bland and sad. Any dish that contains Moo Yor or Vietnamese Pork Sausage must be avoided as their Moo Yor is supposedly not a good quality one. Tom Zap or sour soup is too sweet even though I'm sweet tooth. Price per dish isn't high but compared to what you get and long awaited dishes then it's a no-return.
Very local Bangkok restaurant. Northern Thai / Lao menu, quaint place, very inexpensive. Five minutes' walk from Ploen Chit BTS station.
