J.Boroski reviews
15 First, the good. The bar has a great design, very low lighting, creating a great atmosphere. Good, unintrusive music. The staff were pleasant, seating was comfortable. My cocktail was fine.
Then the bad. There is no menu so the bar person asks what you like. My wife explained she likes long drinks with dark rum, and typically orders a Dark & Stormy (saying she likes spices but not fruity drinks). What she was served was a cocktail that was so infused with birds eye chili that it burnt her lips and throat (the barman heard spicy, not spices). He tried to fix it, then made her a different drink, heavily fruity and not to her taste. But, by this point she was sat in a lot of discomfort with an ice cube on her lips and a glass of water which she was soaking her lips in.
When we asked for the bill, we were charged 125 baht for the water (it's 7 baht from a shop), and both cocktails, despite one being largely untouched which she a.did not like, and b.didn't feel like drinking because of the chili burns. When we complained, they took the water charge off but left both cocktails on the bill.
For bars such as these (we've been to many of them) I understand that the experience is why we're paying high prices (the bill for two cocktails was higher than a very good full Japanese meal earlier in the evening). Our experience was not at all good, but could have been saved by waving the charge for the mostly untouched cocktail.
As for charging for water, this is pure price gouging. When serving hard liquor, water should be offered for free - the cost to the bar is of no consequence.
Two stars rather than one because my cocktail was fine and the staff were pleasant, but didn't deal with the situation well.
A nice bar, dark and sultry. But don’t go here if you are in a group. They have difficultly dealing with large numbers of drinks. We waited a long time for the drinks to appear. However the worst part was when leaving and paying individually. This took a long time. Because they only sell bespoke cocktails all ingredients are charged separately (it also seems to make the drinks more expensive) so it takes a while to identify those relevant and to then make the payment. It became a nightmare for us.
Great atmosphere and lighting. Staff incredibly thoughtful and clued on. Interesting and unusual cocktails with unique presentation and flavour profile
A hidden gem — emphasis on hidden. Lovely speakeasy with incredibly knowledgeable and talented bar staff. A super fun and unique experience.
Update 2023 place deteriorated dramatically: no ‘bespoke’ feel, music is super quiet, cocktails are just standard at best and ridiculously expensive (3 cocktails for THB2.2K=$60). Became like a silly commercial place for tourists; sad.
(2019) Cool place, old rock music and awesome bespoke cocktails.
Staff could be more attentive to what customers want - told twice ‘not too spicy’ but got a spicy cocktail (a good one though).
As a regular guest at this fine high end speakeasy today as a nice gesture of this venue they have offered me a nice bottle of single molt Whisky for my birthday. The attention to details and those little gestures that makes all the differences in the world. Thank you Pete, Almond, Mosse, Harry, peta. And thank you Joseph for finding and managing this fine establishment. Looking forward to your other venues world wide
This place is literally called Speaking easy. Bartender will made by your desire! Came up with surprise mood.
The bar is a unique concept with dim lighting and no menu - you just tell the bartender what you like and they'll make something for you that's generally excellent and extremely well presented. Ambiance and decor is very nice too.
Deducting stars because since there is no menu you are kind of gambling with the drink you order as the price could be sky high. I've been here a few times and one time I got charged silly money for a single cocktail which I had no idea the price of until I got the bill so it's lucky I didn't order 2 or 3 of them! The next time I went I asked the waitress to keep the price to around 4-500 per drink (what I thought was a reasonable request) but she made a face like I had said something offensive and that made me quite uncomfortable so we haven't been back since.
Been here twice already in the past month. J. Boroski is a bar with no menu. You just need to ask the bartenders of which of cocktail you would like to have. Then they will present you different choices of based liquors you choose. (Price per glass depend on what you choose).
Apart from that staffs are very friendly, both A. (female staff) / Mossy or even the owner; they are very entertaining. Plus, drinks are so unique and awesome, from a classic cocktail with a bit twist to something inspired by Thai dishes
Oh, also this bar is vegan-friendly!
The bar doesn't offer a menu which is common for speakeasy bars. However as I asked the bartender of which cocktails I can order, he just kept replying "they are not possible". Very frustrating and disappointing. Definitely never will come back nor recommend this place.
It is impressive of bar cocktails I’ve ever been, Mossy is good entertaining and He made nice cocktails and deep detail every single sip, I forgot to review since last years, bartender talked to us friendly, I felt like Im here to be their guests. One of the best bar I should recommend, I definitely will go and try new challenge cocktails again.
One of Bangkok's best secrets. A mixologist bar in trendy Thonglor. Barman a artist. I'll be back
Very chill vibe. Loved the hospitality of the staff. The Mixologist, Almond and Hari, created some of the most delicious cocktails for me and my friends to enjoy. Very knowledgeable about their craft. Some of us wanted something easy and sweet and others enjoyed something more spirit forward. They mixed up both no problem and each time we ordered the drink was always different. Pretty impressive for a place with no menu. I was also pleased that they are always looking for feedback to find ways to make even better mixes. Great conversation and very attentive to all guest. I’ll be back for sure.
One of top 2 bars in my international list (41 countries). I seek out cocktail bars whenever I travel, and J. Boroski is one of the best. To begin, the atmosphere is very chill and the Playlists are relaxed classic American (USA) music and quiet enough to have an engaging conversation. Service is Omakase/craft cocktails to your taste, mood, or theme. Taste of cocktails is always world class, but if the cocktail isn't to your liking then the bartender will happily change it. Prices reflect this level of atmosphere, service, quality and taste.
On this Bangkok trip, we went to J. Boroski 3 times. Each time the drinks were on point. One time, we chose a theme for the drinks with a few flavor notes as input and the female bartender (Almond) went to work.
The lighting for watching the cocktail making process is great and focusses on the final presentation of the cocktail which is also great for photos!
For our cocktail theme we gave instructions to use the Hide & Seek game for 2 cocktails. With the slogans 1) "nowhere to run", & 2) "nowhere to hide". With just a few flavor specifications on qhat we didn't like Almond was able to articulate the themes into the cocktails. Nowhere to run was energetic and refreshing like you were running. Nowhere to hide was more strong and a little bitter like you lost the hide and seek game.
As many cocktail bars are theme oriented and themes are great way to have cocktails with friends. Its great that an omakase/craft cocktail bar can perform perfect themes on the fly.
The price is perfect for that kind of experience.
Had a great time and will be back each trip to Bangkok.:)
