Holy Rosary Church

This church was built in early of Royal Chakkri era by the Portuguese priests. Located adjacent to Kularb Witaya Catholic school. Unfortunately, tourists were not allowed to attend this day because it had some special event inside the church.

I attended the 10am Chinese mass. At first I thought I went into the wrong one as the liturgy and hymns did not sound Chinese to me. Their pronunciation wasn't Mandarin nor Cantonese- it seemed to be a dialect that sounded like a mixture of Cantonese, Mandarin and Thai. To my surprise the liturgy paper they used was in traditional Chinese. It was an interesting and peaceful morning.

Went to Chinese Mass at 10: 00 today. At first I thought I went wrong, because the scriptures and hymns did not sound like Chinese (like Thai). In the end, I felt that they were mainly speaking Chinese dialects. They mixed some Cantonese, mixed some Mandarin, and mixed some Thai. It is worth noting that their etiquette leaflet is in traditional Chinese. This mass experience is really interesting~

เดิมที่ดินของวัดเป็นของชาวโปรตุเกสที่นับถือคริสต์ศาสนานิกายคาทอลิกที่อพยพมาจากกรุงศรีอยุธยา กลุ่มเดียวกันกับที่ย่านกุฎีจีน แต่เนื่องจากไม่ยอมรับการปกครองของพระชาวฝรั่งเศสจึกอยกตัวออกมาสร้างชุมชนบริเวณนี้ ต่อมารัชกาลที่ 1 ทรงพระราชทานที่ดินให้สร้างโบสถ์หลังแรกขึ้นในปี พ. ศ. 2329 ชื่อว่าโบสถ์ กาลวาริโอ ตามชื่อภูเขาที่พระเยซูถูกตรึงไม้กางเขน และสมัยต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนชื่อโบสถ์เป็น กาลหว่าร์ ส่วนโบสถ์ที่เห็นอยู่ในปัจจุบันเป็นโบสถ์หลังที่ 3 สร้างเสร็จในรัชกาลที่ 5 มีรูปทรงสถาปัตยกรรมแบบกอทิค คือส่วนหน้าเป็นยอดแหลมพุ่งสูง ประดิษฐานไม้กางเขนขอบซุ้มประตูหน้าต่าง ใช้เส้นโค้งหรือยอดแหลมคล้ายโดม ภายในประดับด้วยกระจกสี

It is a sacred, beautiful, ancient and quiet place. Although the inside is not open to visit, you can still feel the peaceful atmosphere outside.

This is a Roman Catholic church in Talat Noi area. Portuguese immigrants from Ayutthaya built this church 100 years ago. Since then, the church has undergone 3 times of restoration and repair to become a beautiful Gothic architectural block as it is today. Inside the church is a place to keep antiquities from the Ayutthaya period including the image of Our Lady of the Rosary, the statue of Jesus Christ. All are still being used in religious ceremonies.

I attended the mass at 5: 30, but there were about 12 believers praying the rosary 30 minutes before.

This very pretty church is definitely worth a visit, both for its lovely architecture and splendid stained-glass windows as for its tranquil riverside setting in a bustling schoolyard tucked away next to the river.

แต่น่าจะเพราะมีนทท. เดินเข้าไปในระหว่างที่มีพิธีทางศาสนาเยอะมาก. ก็เลยขึ้นป้ายเตือนเยอะแยะ

เพราะบริการดีอาหารอร่อยราคาไม่แพงไม่แรงเกินกว่าคนทำงานหาเช้ากินค่ำจะซื้อกินได้และแม่ค้าไม่ดูถูกคนค่ะ

โบสท์สวยงาม อยู่ภายในโรงเรียนกุหลาบวิทยา สามารถเดินมาทางมาท่าเรือ เป็นแหล่งท่องเทียวในย่านตลาดน้อย ส่งน่าสนใจ เป็นโบสท์ที่เก่าแก่ลำดับต้นๆ ของกรุงเทพฯ น่าเสียดายวันมาโบสท์ไม่เปิด ภาพจึงเป็นจากภายนอก ส่วนภาพภายในสามารถหาดูจากรีวิวฉบับอื่นได้นะครับ การเดินทางมาชมภายในโบสท์ถ้าเป็นวันหยุดต้องมาหลัง 16.30 โบสท์ถึงจะเปิด สำหรับการเดินทาง สิ่งที่น่าสนใจ สถาบัตถภายนอกของโบสถ์ทรงโกธิก, รูปแม่พระลูกประคำ และ รูปพระศพของพระเยซูเจ้า การเดินทางสามารถมาด้วยรถส่วนตัว หรือรถสาธารณะประจำทางสาย 1 หรือมาด้วยเรือ มาลงที่ท่าเรือกรมเจ้าท่า ใกล้กับ โซวเฮงไถ่ และตลาดน้อย

️ประวัติความเป็นมา โบสถ์กาลหว่าร์ หรือ วัดแม่พระลูกประคำ เป็นโบสถ์คริสต์นิกายโรมันคาทอลิก ทรงกอทิก โบสถ์แห่งนี้ไม่ใช่โบสถ์หลังแรก หากแต่เป็นโบสถ์หลังที่สาม ซึ่งสร้างขึ้นเพื่อทดแทนโบสถ์หลังเดิมที่ถูกทิ้งร้างภายหลังเพลิงไหม้ใหญ่ในปี พ. ศ. 2407 โบสถ์ในปัจจุบันได้สร้างขึ้นโดยคุณพ่อแดซาลส์ ชาวฝรั่งเศส ในปี พ. ศ. 2434 ปัจจุบันโบสถ์มีอายุรวมแล้ว 131 ปี ถือเป็นโบสถ์ที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งในสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์

โบสถ์ได้รับการบูรณะใหญ่ในปี พ. ศ. 2500 ในสมัยที่คุณพ่ออาแมสตอย เป็นอธิการโบสถ์ และถือเป็นการฉลองครบ 60 ปีของโบสถ์กาลหว่าร์อีกด้วย การบูรณะครั้งล่าสุดคือในช่วงปี พ. ศ. 2526 - 2532 โดยมีบาทหลวงประวิทย์ พงษ์วิรัชไชย เป็นอธิการโบสถ์ในขณะนั้น ปัจจุบันโบสถ์กาลหว่าร์ได้ขึ้นทะเบียนอนุรักษ์เป็นโบราณสถานโดยกรมศิลปากรเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว
โบสถ์แห่งนี้มีจุดเด่นที่สำคัญคือ รูปปั้น 2 รูปซึ่งเป็นสมบัติเก่าแก่ตั้งแต่การเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาครั้งที่สอง ได้แก่ "รูปแม่พระลูกประคำ" และ "รูปพระศพของพระเยซูเจ้า" โดยทั้งหมดนี้ยังคงเก็บรักษาและใช้ในพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
ปัจจุบัน อธิการโบสถ์องค์ปัจจุบันคือ บาทหลวงไพทูรย์ หอมจินดา

From this beautiful church. You can walk get in to the mystery art street and Chinese old building. It s worth to walk around.

The church is quite charming and cozy. With a Portuguese style. The church goers and the priest were sweet and it felt very welcoming.

I was here after Covid pandemic and the church was closed due the pandemic so I can only check the place out from outside.

Interesting neo-gothic church with many elements imported, not just the faith.it was built by the Portuguese merchants in the late 19th century, yet has the very old "stations of the cross" in French, probably salvaged form another church in Laos or Vietnam, and newer Chinese writing in various places.the ceiling is the most impressive part of it.it is an active in use for services and a Chinese-Thai catholic school, so like any temple, be respectful if you visit.

Closed when I went 1pm on a Wednesday. Not sure if covid related or just bad timing. Building is gorgeous
